The modern unisex bumbag was invented 1962 by Aussie Melba Stone, possibly inspired by kangaroo pouches. It took 20 years for the fashion industry to catch on, in late 80s. It became a style cliché for both drug dealers & middle-aged tourists, lost popularity until its cool factor was revived by high fashion industry. The cross-worn front bumbag is more secure from pickpockets. This bag is more practical than the Tote and Holdall strap bags, especially for sports fans i.e. runners / climbers / surfers. Originally a belt bag worn on waist/hips, now even cross-shoulder slung.  It was even unisex in Middle Ages, the “sporran” bag attached to belt by chatelaine hook.
