Origin: Malay/Java Archipelago, meaning covering / Pacific islands / Tahiti / Polynesian / Africa, through batik veg dyeing (melted wax parts do not absorb color). Sri Lankan men wear it at home. Male version is maro in Pacific, Samoan lavalava, Hawai'i pā'ū, Indonesian kain, Thai pakome, S Indian mundus, Brazilian manga, Saudi izaars, Oman wizaars, Kikoi in Swahili (mostly worn by Kenyan Maasai/Tanzania/Zanzibar) or mangas for men.
The sarong was imported in the West thanks to Arab traders since the 1300s, popularized in 1940s since Hollywood actress Dorothy Lamour, re-popularized in 1980s by longer versions.
